How {NOT} to Select, Pick, and Choose A Custom Portrait Photographer
1. Do {NOT} choose a photographer based solely on price.
After all, the exact same quality prints, composition, editing, props, backgrounds, and style from a custom photographer can easily be duplicated in a mall or chain photo studio. Right? Right?? Wrong!!!
2. Do {NOT} hire a mall photographer or chain photo studio if you're looking for unique artistic images of heirloom quality.
These photographers earn minimum wage, have minimal training, are working for a company (not you), and churn photos that look like everyone else's! Additionally, they do {NOT} have a vested interest in your memories like a custom portrait photographer does.
3. Do {NOT} perform a random search on Google and book a photographer without talking to, meeting, or seeing examples of his or her work.
If you aren't comfortable with the photographer and/or don't like his or her work, you don't want to find out the day of your shoot!
4. Do {NOT} print your custom photographer's photos at budget photo labs.
They're all the same, right?? Wrong again! If you go to lengths to purchase the high-resolution images for hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars, why would you compromise quality? (And if you print images anywhere without permission, you can end up in Federal prison or with a fine of up to $150,000.)
5. Do {NOT} fail to do a reputation check of your photographer.
You can learn lots by performing simple Google searches. And you definitely do {NOT} want to end up with a fauxtogropher. It happens more than you might think.
6. Do {NOT} ignore photographer certifications, memberships in professional organizations such as PPAand WPPI, or philanthropic work.
This signifies a photographer who takes his or her work, business, professional growth, and art seriously.
7. Do {NOT} ignore the fact that a professional custom photographer is a visual artist.
Photographers of this nature will {NOT} release sub-par work or change photos to black and white on a client's whim. The editing of a photo is part of the art of the photo.
8. Do {NOT} forget to like your potential photographer's Facebook page, follow him or her on Twitter, or read his or her blog.
This is an easy way to "get to know" your photographer, see current and/or recent photo session sneak peeks, and get excited for your shoot! Sometimes photogs will post product info, limited-time promotions, and more goodies!
9. Do {NOT} ask for unsolicited discounts or coupons in efforts to snag a bargain deal.
You wouldn't want a doctor who discounts his or her surgery. Or a hairdresser who provides cut-rates (pun intended--groan). Significant discounts often mean cut corners. And you don't want it to be your photo session's corner that is cut. You get what you pay for.
10. Do {NOT} wait until the last minute to book and pay for your session.
The mall and chain store photographers can always squeeze someone in, so a custom portrait photographer can do the same thing. Right? Wrong yet again, friend. Professional custom portrait photographers only shoot a limited number of sessions per week/month/year so that their time can be devoted to those lucky clients who were quick enough to nab their open slots. (and their own families!!)
